In 1993, the Government laid siege on the the Branch Davidian compound at Waco, TX. They decided to take action because after the 51 day siege, they could not withstand the pressure to take action. Their egos couldn’t. The attack precipitated a suicidal catastrophe. What should they have done in the first place? That is the lesson of Waco!
First, they should not have attacked. NOT EVER! They should have established control of the area, providing any and all reasonable imaginable humanitarian support to the besieged and waited – as long as it might take – AS LONG AS IT MIGHT TAKE – for the situation to settle down and sort itself out. Even if the site became a welfare colony.
This is the approach that should be taken towards the demonstrators on our college campuses. NO MILITARY WEAPONS OR GARB; Never initiating any violent action against demonstrators. Acting only when violence is initiated by the demonstrators. In the event of occupation of campus facilities by demonstrators, taking no action to take back the facilities. On the contrary, providing any and all support to the demonstrators – including food, water, medical support, free passage on humanitarian grounds – until the demonstrators realize that this will continue forever without them achieving their goals.
The lesson we have not learned is that when our egos compel us to take premature action, we LOSE!
