In the Oxford ed., we have (Song of Solomon 2:1-3):

I am a rose of Sharon,
    A lily of the valleys.
    As a lily among brambles,
So is my love among maidens
As an apple tree among the trees of the wood,
So is my beloved among young men.

Saron is “the rich coastal plane south of Carmel” (Oxf. notes). Ariel is of course the apple of his eye, and a well spoken word like apples of gold behind a filigree of silver” (Proverbs 25:11). Filigree is a silver setting, like lace, so the apples are partly visible and partly hidden. Lincoln, I think, said the Declaration is to the Constitution like apples of Gold in a filigree of silver.

The Song of Solomon is included in the sacred texts because the soul as an image of God is visible in the love between man and woman. Marriage is then like the divine wedding at the end, and the wedding chamber a great mystery- yet visible to all through the filigree!
